On April 25 1915, brave soldiers from Australia and New Zealand fought for freedom. On this day in 2015, we remember them. We commemorate those who fought in the trenches in World War I through to current conflicts and whether you choose to pay your respects at a dawn service or at the RSL over a game of two-up, we’ve round up some of the events happening around the city this ANZAC Day.

Ahead of ANZAC Day this Saturday, catch a performance of Alan Seymour’s controversial The One Day of the Yearat The Arts Centre Gold Coast. The play looks at our national legend through the eyes of generation, class and character and is showing on April 23 and 24. On the northern end, the Beenleigh Theatre Company is also paying tribute with a production of The First: an ANZAC tribute to the first AIF. The season began on April 12 and runs through to April 25.

Brave the chill and partake in a ANZAC Symbolic Sleep Out at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary this Friday night. The event is $50 and includes access to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, a guided walking tour of the Currumbin RSL Commemorative Photo Exhibition with all profits going to support Soldier On. While you’re in the area, head along to the dawn service at Elephant Rock in Currumbin. The beach service is traditionally one of the city’s most popular with crowds expected to peak at 25,000 for this year’s special event. If you’re planning on heading along, parking can be problematic so your best bet is to take advantage of the Park and Ride shuttle bus which will commence at 3:30 am from the Currumbin RSL, The Pines Elanora Shopping Centre, IGA Currumbin Fair Shopping Centre and the Tugun Community Centre. The march commences at 4:35 am and the service begins at 5:00 am. Head back to the Currumbin RSL for a gunfire breakfast from 6:30 am.

To mark this year’s centenary event, Gold Coast surf lifesavers will honour the ANZACs by re-enacting the Gallipoli landing dressed in full World War I uniforms. The re-enactment will take place at the Jack Evans Boat Harbour in Tweed Heads from 4:30 am. The dawn service will commence immediately after and will be broadcast across two large screens. Twin Towns Services Club is also putting on a breakfast if you’re a little peckish.

For traditional commemorations, head along to one of the city’s many dawn services. The Burleigh Heads service will be held at Burleigh Heads Memorial Park from 4:15 am. Hang around for the gunfire breakfast and a Hot Toddy at the Burleigh Heads Bowls Club, which commences at the conclusion of the service. The Surfers Paradise dawn service on Surfers Paradise Beach (opposite Trickett Street), gets underway at 5:30 am. Slightly further north, the Southport RSL is hosting a march from 4:30 am ahead of the service at 5:00 am. The North Gold Coast RSL at Helensvale is holding a service from 5:25 am, as is the Runaway Bay sub branch with a dawn service commencing at 5:00 am at the ANZAC memorial. The Upper Coomera Maudsland dawn service gets underway from 5:30 am at the War Memorial in the gardens of QCWA Hall while the Mudgeeraba Dawn service in Elsie Laver Park starts at 5:00 am followed by a gunfire breakfast at Memorial Hall on Railway Street. The Nerang dawn service gets underway at 4:45 am at the Nerang RSL Memorial Club. If 5:00 am is not your finest hour to be awake, you can pay your respects at one of the many mid morning services that are held at various locations around the Gold Coast. For a full list of Anzac services, times and locations, visit the City of Gold Coast’s website.

From 1:00 pm, head along to your local RSL for a game of two-up. The game, whilst still technically illegal in Queensland, has become a tradition as it is intended to mark a shared experience with diggers who would play two-up in the trenches and on the troop ships. It’s also the only day of the year you can walk around with money in the air shouting heads or tails without looking a little bit odd. The Mermaid Tavern will open from midday and be playing two-up while Helm Bar & Bistro in Surfers Paradise is opening from 1:00 pm with live music from The Hanlon’s from 8:00 pm. The Gold Coast Turf Club is also hosting the biggest two-up event on the Gold Coast alongside the prestigious Prime Minister’s Cup this ANZAC Day . The venue will live-stream the Gallipoli dawn service, doors open at 10:00 am.

For musically-minded folks, the Gold Coast Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Mark Turpin will entertain with a production of War and Peace, a concert celebrating the ANZAC spirit and features music inspired from literary masterpieces. War and Peace gets underway at the Robina Auditorium from 2:30 pm.
